To create an avatar is as easy as creating an account on their forums, but to truly personalize it to represent you, one will first need some gold, community wide currency that can be used to buy clothes and other items. Log in to your Gaia Online account. If you do not have one, create one. The process is quick and costs absolutely nothing.

Earn gold to buy clothing and accessories for your Gaia avatar by posting on their message boards or playing some of their many flash based games. If you do not feel like taking the time to post many messages on their forums, you can also purchase Gaia gold cards from stores like Wal-Mart that will give you an allotted amount of gold.

Browse through the many different shops to find exactly what you want to deck your avatar out in. When you find something you can afford, click on it and select Buy. This will unlock the items in your avatar inventory.

Click on your avatar, which is above the navigation bar. This will take you to your inventory page where you can select the clothes you want to put on your avatar. Once you have made all of the necessary changes to your avatar, click Save, located above your avatar fashion window.

Like real life, it pays to be thrifty. Some of the nicest looking items in the game are also incredibly cheap compared to the more expensive, slightly altered counterparts available in other stores.

Keep your avatar tasteful. Gross or inappropriate avatars can be reported to the Gaia Online administrators, which can result in a suspension or permanent banning.
